in motion
What is it about this time of the year; summer is long gone, winter is still a ways off. We are in a time of transition, transition between seasons. And so transition is a season unto itself. i predict
To quote an article by BENEDICT CAREY from the this morning’s New York Times, “The brain evolved to predict, and it does so by identifying patterns”.
We, as humans are the pattern finders. We are wired that way. Observing patterns is the basis for the theory of evolution, as well as intelligent design. It is the source of the belief in an after life, the source of constellations, of calendars and clocks. Patterns and prediction frame houses and build brick walls.
Here’s the point. These patterns are a function of our anatomy, perceived by the human organ called the brain. Our world is perception, illusions perpetrated on ourselves through our thought processes. That we create the patterns, is scientific fact; to believe otherwise is called delusion.

i’ve been working on the rail road
The other day, doing a Times crossword, the clue was “singer Washington”, the answer: Dinah. Now there’s a name you don’t hear much any more, as if you ever heard it much in the past. Dinah Shore, Dinah Washington and “someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah”, that’s about all I can think of. Is anyone in America naming their daughter Dinah? Just wondering.
